It assumes an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, which is the figure most publishing tools use. Very short texts show seconds instead of minutes.
Both figures are shown. "Characters" includes spaces and line breaks. "No spaces" counts only visible characters, which is what some platforms and forms measure.
Each block of text separated by a line break counts as one paragraph. Empty lines are ignored.
